The Writer's Lifestyle

A fountain pen that leaks feels like a defective pen. It almost never is. Ink escapes from exactly four places, each with a different cause, and three of the four are things the writer is doing rather than things the pen is doing wrong. Work out which of the four you have and the fix usually takes under five minutes. This guide covers every way a fountain pen leaks — ink in the cap, ink at the joint, ink on your fingers, ink through a shirt pocket — how to tell them apart, and what to do about each. Tested across the Wordsworth & Black line with both cartridges and converters. Key Takeaways Ink escapes from four places: the nib and cap, the section joint, the converter or cartridge seal, and the feed. Identify which one before changing anything. Most "sudden" leaks are air pressure, not damage. Air trapped in the barrel expands with heat and altitude and pushes ink out of the feed. Flights, hot cars, and a pen carried against the body all do it. Ink in the cap after carrying the pen nib-down is normal capillary behaviour, not a fault. Store pens nib-up and it stops. A wet section joint almost always means a loose converter or an over-tightened barrel — not a cracked pen. Fill the converter to roughly 80%, not to the brim. The remaining air is what absorbs pressure changes. A completely full pen has nowhere to put the expansion. Genuine hardware failure is rare and has one clear signature: ink appears with the pen at rest, at stable temperature, on a level surface. First: Is It Actually Leaking? Four different things get called a leak, and only two of them are one. Sorting this out first saves taking apart a pen that is working correctly. Nib Creep — Not a Leak A thin film of ink that gathers on the top surface of the nib, around the breather hole. It looks alarming and does nothing. Certain saturated inks creep more than others. Wipe it off; the pen is fine. Ink in the Cap — Usually Not a Leak A few drops of ink inside the cap after a day in a bag is capillary action, not failure. The feed holds ink at the nib by capillary force; carrying the pen nib-down for hours lets gravity win a little. Annoying, entirely normal, and fixable by how you store the pen. Burping — A Real Leak, With a Pressure Cause A sudden blob of ink released onto the page mid-sentence, or found sitting in the cap after a temperature change. The pen is behaving like a thermometer: air inside the barrel expanded and displaced ink. This is the most common real leak and almost never a hardware fault. Seepage — A Real Leak, With a Mechanical Cause Ink appearing on your fingers at the grip, or wet threads when you unscrew the barrel. Something in the seal path is loose, cracked, or misaligned. This is the one worth investigating properly. The Four Leak Points Every fountain pen leak comes from one of these. The diagram shows where each sits on the pen and what causes it. The Four Fountain Pen Leak Points Where Ink Escapes converter / cartridge 1 · Nib & cap stored nib-down 2 · Section joint over-tightened or cross-threaded 3 · Converter seal not fully seated 4 · Feed air pressure Points 1 and 4 are behavioural. Points 2 and 3 are mechanical. Only point 2 is ever a manufacturing fault, and rarely. Four leak points, two causes. Fix the behaviour before suspecting the pen. Diagnose It in Two Minutes Work down this table. The location of the ink identifies the cause more reliably than anything else. Where the ink is When it appears Cause Fix Inside the cap After hours in a bag or pocket Stored nib-down Store nib-up; see below On top of the nib only Constantly, small amount Nib creep — not a leak Wipe; change ink if it bothers you Sudden blob on the page After a temperature or altitude change Air expansion in the barrel Fill to 80%; equalize before uncapping On your fingers at the grip While writing Ink tracking down the feed, or a loose joint Check the joint and converter seating Wet threads inside the barrel When you unscrew it Converter not seated, or barrel over-tightened Reseat converter; snug, not tight Pooling with the pen at rest On a level desk, stable temperature Genuine hardware failure Replace the part — see the last section Air Pressure: the Cause Behind Most Sudden Leaks This is the single most useful thing to understand about fountain pens, and it explains most leaks that seem to come from nowhere. A partly filled pen contains ink and air. Air expands when it warms and when external pressure drops. The ink has nowhere to go except out through the feed. Nothing is broken — the pen is obeying physics. The Three Situations That Trigger It Flying. Cabin pressure drops on ascent, and the air in the barrel expands against the lower outside pressure. This is the classic case. A hot car or a sunny windowsill. A pen left on a dashboard can climb 20°C in an hour. The air inside expands accordingly. Carrying the pen against your body. A shirt pocket sits at skin temperature. Take the pen out into a cold room and the reverse happens; put it back and it warms again. Repeated cycling is what eventually pushes ink out. The Rules That Prevent It Fill to about 80%, never to the brim. That remaining air is a buffer — it has room to expand before it displaces ink. A completely full pen has no slack at all. This one habit prevents most pressure leaks. Or run it completely full with no air at all — the other stable state. Awkward to achieve with a converter, easy with a fresh cartridge. Fly nib-up. Cap on, clip up, in a shirt pocket rather than flat in a bag. Let the pen reach room temperature before uncapping after a flight or a cold walk. Two minutes is enough. For travel, prefer a cartridge. A sealed cartridge has a smaller air volume and a tighter seal than a converter. Our fill system guide covers the trade-offs in full, and the EDC guide covers carrying a pen daily without incident. Fixing Each Leak Point 1. Ink in the Cap Store the pen nib-up: clip up in a shirt pocket, upright in a desk cup, or flat in a case rather than nose-down in a bag. Flat is acceptable; nib-down for hours is not. If ink still appears when stored correctly, the cap is not sealing. On a screw-cap pen check for a hair or a fibre on the threads. On a snap-cap, listen for the click. 2. Wet Section Joint Unscrew the barrel and wipe both threads completely dry. Reseat and tighten snug, then stop. Over-tightening is a genuine cause of leaks: it can compress the section against the converter and force ink past the seal, and on a resin pen it can hairline-crack the threads. If the threads are wet again within a day of writing, move to the converter. 3. Converter or Cartridge Not Seated The most common mechanical cause, and the easiest to miss. A converter that looks attached can be a millimetre short of home. Remove it, dry the nipple on the section and the mouth of the converter, and push it back on with a firm straight press until it stops. It should need a small deliberate effort. If it slides on loosely, the seal is worn — a replacement converter is the fix, and it is the cheapest part on the pen. With cartridges: push until you feel the seal pierce and seat. A half-pierced cartridge leaks around the neck. 4. Feed Weeping While Writing If ink builds up on the underside of the nib and reaches your fingers, the feed is delivering more than the nib can lay down. Three causes, in order of likelihood: Heat from your hand during a long session. Take a two-minute break; it settles. An over-wet ink for the nib width. A wet ink in a Broad nib floods. Match ink wetness inversely to nib width — the nib guide explains the pairing. Residue in the feed from a colour change or a long idle period. Flush it. Our cleaning guide has the full procedure; a bottle of pen cleaner at $19.90 clears what plain water cannot. Prevention: Five Habits Store nib-up. One habit, eliminates the most common complaint entirely. Fill to 80%. Leave the air buffer. Flush every 4–8 weeks. Clean feeds regulate flow properly. Dried residue does not. Snug, not tight. Applies to the barrel, the converter, and the cap. Keep pens out of cars and off windowsills. Heat is the enemy; see the ink storage guide, which applies to filled pens as much as to bottles. When the Pen Really Is Faulty Genuine hardware failure has one clear signature: ink appears with the pen at rest, on a level surface, at stable room temperature, stored nib-up. If any of those conditions is not met, you are still looking at one of the causes above. Three parts can actually fail, all replaceable: The converter seal — the usual culprit and the cheapest fix. Replace from the converter collection. The nib unit — a bent or sprung nib can hold ink where it should not. The Replacement Nibs Collection covers the Crest, Erudite, Majesti and Primori sections separately. The section threads — a hairline crack in the resin, almost always from over-tightening. This is the one that needs a new pen rather than a new part. If you are replacing the pen rather than the part, the Crest Set at $49.99 and the Erudite at $49.99 both ship with a converter and cartridge compatibility, so nothing else in your setup has to change. Frequently Asked Questions Why does my fountain pen leak on airplanes? Cabin pressure drops as the aircraft climbs, so the air trapped in the barrel expands and pushes ink out through the feed. Fill to about 80% rather than completely full, carry the pen nib-up in a shirt pocket rather than flat in a bag, and let it reach cabin temperature before uncapping. A sealed cartridge travels better than a converter. Is ink in the cap normal? A few drops after hours of nib-down carry is normal capillary behaviour, not a fault. Store the pen nib-up and it stops. If ink still collects when the pen is stored upright, the cap is not sealing — check the threads for debris. Why does ink get on my fingers while I write? Usually heat. Your hand warms the section, the air inside expands, and the feed delivers more ink than the nib can lay down. It settles after a short break. If it happens from the first line, check that the converter is fully seated and that the ink is not too wet for your nib width. Can over-tightening the barrel cause a leak? Yes, and it is a genuinely common cause. Over-tightening compresses the section against the converter and can force ink past the seal, and on a resin pen it can hairline-crack the threads. Tighten until snug and stop. Should I fill my converter all the way to the top? No. Fill to roughly 80% and leave an air buffer that can absorb temperature and pressure changes. A completely full pen has no slack, so any expansion goes straight out of the feed. The only other stable state is completely full with no air at all, which is easier to achieve with a fresh cartridge than with a converter. My pen leaks but only in summer. Why? Temperature. Warm air in the barrel occupies more volume and displaces ink. Keep pens out of cars, off sunny windowsills, and out of shirt pockets in hot weather. Filling to 80% rather than full makes the seasonal difference much smaller. Is a leaking fountain pen covered by the warranty? A failed converter seal or a defective nib unit is a parts issue and both are inexpensive to replace. A section cracked by over-tightening is user damage. Establish which one you have using the resting test: if ink appears with the pen at rest, on a level surface, at stable temperature and stored nib-up, the hardware has failed. What is the difference between a leaking pen and a skipping pen? They are opposite failures of the same system. A leak means too much ink reaching the nib; skipping means too little. Both usually trace back to the feed, the ink, or the paper rather than to the nib itself. For the other direction, see why your fountain pen skips. Final Verdict Almost every fountain pen leak is one of three habits: storing the pen nib-down, filling the converter to the brim, or over-tightening the barrel. Fix those three and the problem disappears for most writers without a single part being replaced. If ink still appears with the pen at rest, on a level surface, at stable temperature, replace the converter first — it is the cheapest part and the most likely to have failed. The nib unit is next. Only a cracked section calls for a new pen. And if the pen travels with you daily, switch it to cartridges and keep the bottled ink at your desk. Sealed, smaller air volume, no bottle in a bag. → Browse the full Wordsworth & Black Fountain Pen Collection
